I recently completed the Defensive Red Dot Firearms Course instructed by Herfel Torrez, and I can confidently say it was one of the most valuable and professionally delivered firearms trainings I’ve ever attended. From start to finish, the instruction was clear, structured, and rooted in real-world defensive application—not just theory.

Herfel’s depth of knowledge, attention to safety, and ability to break down complex techniques into practical, repeatable skills truly set this course apart. Whether it was mastering red dot fundamentals, improving target acquisition, or building confidence under realistic defensive scenarios, every portion of the training was purposeful and impactful.

What impressed me most was the balance between discipline, encouragement, and high performance standards. Herfel creates an environment where both newer shooters and experienced operators can grow, refine their technique, and walk away noticeably more capable than when they arrived.

Herfel, JP, and Carlos did and excellent job of helping me improve my overall skill with an AR including the science of gunfights & body mechanics, use of a red dot sight, and improvements to my rifle to make it more user friendly in scary situations. As always Herfel and his instructors were not only great at imparting information and concepts but were extremely helpful in correcting any mistakes I made while maintaining solid range safety. I am looking forward to more training with Valortec’s team of instructors in the near future; I am especially interested in the ‘force on force’ training in Lakewood!!

This training class exceeds any self defense class I have taken. Herfel and Carlos are great instructors. I highly recommend this training for beginners to experienced shooters. If you want to improve your shooting skills Herfel and Carlos will help you achieve your goals!!
